Anthony M. Zampella, 86, of Union Twp., Douglassville, PA passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at Keystone Villa at Douglassville. Born in Birdsboro, PA he was the son of the late Frank and Josephine M. (Ianniello) Zampella. He was the widower of Elaine J. (Thompson) Zampella.

Tony graduated from Birdsboro High School, Class of 1956. He was the ultimate athlete, lettering in 4 sports: baseball, soccer, basketball, and track & field. He earned his bachelor’s degree from West Chester University, and in 1959, he led the soccer team to win its first national championship. He was an All-American Honorable Mention soccer player. He later earned his Master’s Degree from Temple University.

He served our in the U.S. Marine Corp. after college.

Tony’s love of sports led him to start his career as a Phys. Ed. Teacher in 1961, and in 1962 he landed a job in the Pottstown School District. In 1969 he transitioned into Principal of the Jefferson Elementary School. Over the next several years, he moved to the Intermediate School, Jr. High, and finally to the Sr. High School in 1984. Over his 33 years, he touched the lives of countless students, parents, teachers, peers, and members of the community. He loved meeting people, learning about people, and helping people. Many would say he was a tough Principal but was always honest and fair. He loved supporting all the sports teams along the way. You could always find him in the stands for a Friday night football game or in the bleachers for a basketball game or wrestling match. Tony was so proud when the Pottstown Boys Basketball Team won the State Championship in 1993.

Tony enjoyed fishing, golfing, swimming, playing cards, hiking, and yard work. He loved watching the NY Yankees and the Penn State Nittany Lions. He was a member of the American Legion Post 626.

Tony is survived by 3 sons: Anthony L. LaScala, Jr. husband of Donna of North Ft. Myers, FL, Nicholas R. LaScala, husband of Christina of Exeter Twp., PA, and Vincent J. LaScala of Pottstown, PA; 1 daughter: Lisa L. Kuneck, wife of Craig of West Chester, PA; brother: John Zampella of Muhlenberg Twp., PA; sister: Victoria Johnson of Monroe Twp., NJ; 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter: Catherine A. LaScala.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, March 10, 2025 at 11:00AM at Immaculate Conception BVM RC Church 905 Chestnut St. Douglassville, PA 19518. A visitation will be from 10:00AM-11:00AM at the church, prior to Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A luncheon will follow the burial in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made In Memory of Anthony to Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs 1400 Blackhorse Hill Rd. (135) Coatesville, PA 19320, checks payable to “Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs” or online at Coatesville.va.gov
