John Joseph Breton, 93, of Mount Penn Borough, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2025, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Loretta Jean (Ehrgood), with whom he shared 45 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2004, and the beloved father of John and his wife, Lori, of Elverson, and Joseph and his wife, Jennifer, of Exeter. Family was everything to John, and he cherished his grandchildren and their spouses—Marc and his wife, Abbie; Luke and his wife, Bethany; Ryan; Joshua; and Isaac—as well as his great-grandson, Roman.
Born in Reading on November 25, 1931, he was the son of the late John and Anna (Stelmach) Breton. He grew up with his sisters, Helen, Anna, Dolores, and Marie, all of whom predeceased him. John graduated from Reading High School in 1949 and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning home to Berks County, he continued his education at Albright College and other nearby universities. He spent his career in finance, most recently working for Horrigan Equipment Leasing before retiring in 1993.
A lifelong Berks Countian, John was an easy and loyal friend who endeared himself to everyone he met. He could hardly make it through the grocery store without someone calling out an enthusiastic “Johnny!”—or, in his later years, “Pop!”—as he ran into friends old and new, including those of his children and grandchildren. John’s greatest gift, however, was his unwavering devotion to his family, which was legendary. Sharing a family meal with his children and grandchildren to hear about their lives was his greatest joy. He never missed a concert, a sporting event, or an opportunity to help. He will be dearly and indescribably missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Helping Harvest, supporting those in need by giving them the gift of a family meal that they can share with their loved ones.
Dengler-Sowers Funeral Home & Crematory, LLC., Birdsboro, PA is in charge of arrangements.
